$250 workshop fee

Marcia Johnson will help playwrights to create scripts which focus on character and story. An emphasis will be placed on dialogue so one-person shows would not be the best fix. Each participant should have a script in development or at least a story idea. The course will consist of in-class exercises as well as homework assignments.

Artist Bio

Marcia Johnson is a theatre artist based in Toronto. She directed her five-minute Zoom play A Magical Place for the Stratford Festival and National Arts Centre’s National Transformations Project.

 

Serving Elizabeth premiered at Western Canada Theatre in February 2020. She reprised her role inThousand Islands Playhouse in October 2021. The play was also produced at the Stratford Festival’s under canopy season.

 

Other plays include Binti’s Journey, an adaptation of the teen fiction novel The Heaven Shop by Deborah Ellis (Theatre Direct Canada/Manitoba Theatre for Young People/Black Theatre Workshop) and Say Ginger Ale (SummerWorks Festival, adapted from her award-nominated CBC Radio Drama).

 

Marcia has written opera libretti including two collaborations with Stephen A. Taylor: the Dora-nominated suspense My Mother’s Ring (Tapestry) and Paradises Lost (University of Illinois), based on the Ursula K. Le Guin novella. 

 

Marcia is also a director/narrator of audiobooks for Penguin Random House Canada and ECW Press.
